Canada’s engineering job market is more nuanced than the national employment headlines might suggest. The broader labour market has been cautious through much of 2026, although conditions improved in July. Stats Can’s Labour Market Survey results for July reported, Employment increased by 75,000 and Canada’s unemployment rate declined to 6.4%. Professional, scientific and technical services added 17,000 jobs during the month, while construction added 16,000.
At the same time, long-term investment in infrastructure, energy, nuclear, advanced manufacturing and major capital projects continues to require specialized engineering and project-delivery expertise.

A Limited rating does not mean there are no jobs in that province. Nor does a Good rating mean every qualified candidate will quickly find one.

International Experience: Focus on Relevance
For internationally trained engineers, there have also been important changes in Ontario.
Professional Engineers Ontario removed its Canadian engineering experience requirement for P.Eng. applicants in May 2023. The Government of Ontario introduced another change on January 1, 2026: employers generally cannot include a Canadian experience requirement in a publicly advertised job posting or its associated application form. That does not mean every engineering experience is equivalent for every role.
Employers can still look for the specific skills, knowledge and experience legitimately required to perform the work. A mining project operating in Arctic conditions, for example, may require experience with extreme-weather operations, particular geology, regulatory requirements or comparable technical environments. A quality role may require the level of English communication needed to interpret specifications, document findings, communicate issues and protect product quality and safety.
The distinction is relevance.
International experience should be assessed for the technical knowledge, project complexity, working conditions, regulatory exposure and results it demonstrates, rather than discounted simply because it was gained outside Canada.
For internationally trained professionals, the same career advice applies as it does to any experienced engineer: make the connection clear. Show how the experience you have matches the environment, technical requirements and problems the employer needs you to solve.
